3.    Select a passage from a novel you have chosen to study which deals with despair and euphoria. How might staging, design and acting combine to register one of these experiences for an audience?

From my love, my love, I feel strongly and emotionally about her euphoria moment because it makes me feel the happiness in her life. Even though she meets many troubles at the end, she still recalls the memory of before; and I still want to highlight her happy moments. As a result, I chose the point when she goes to hotel, and sees Daniel is there. And started to take care of Daniel from her heart and her soul. She spends her days and nights taking care of his body, messaging, putting energy for him, but as she gets weaker, he also takes care of her, and that's the point when they bond together the strongest. The scene that I want to display is when they find each other and know they cannot live without one another; Desiree lives in affection from Daniel; Daniel, on the other hand, cannot live without her since he is in the worst situation. And both of them take care of each other; I think that part actually emerges with the affection and euphoria from both Daniel and Désirée. Their eyes are all about each others. " Desiree climbed trees and threw down the fruits for the crippled Daniel to catch." This sentence actually shows her affection towards Daniel. Not willing to let him get hurt, she climbs to the trees to get food to eat for both of them. It also shows the ideal life for the 'couple': what Desiree wants to do when she gets accepted from the Beauxhomme family. The happiness is exposes largely through the words and the actions of enfolding in each other's arms.
To show the happiness, I will stage it with theatre-in-the-round to show the close connection between the audience and the actor so that the audience can feel the warmth and happiness in the actors. In other stages, it won't show more emotions than using theatre-in-the-round. Moreover, I will use the forest or the garden to show the lives of these two characters; this can connect back to the original life of Desiree. In the book, it also has a lot of descriptions about when they are at the garden, picking fruits, bathing in the pool. As a result, it might have trees, birds, rabbits, and all different animals around to show the prosperity of the garden, and also the love. Maybe, the trees can be covered in pinkish and redish flood lighting to highlight the passionate love; in addition, the trees can produce pinkish fruits, sakura, and other as well. Those can happen on the center stage left. On the side of the stage, center stage right, there can also be some pool like water fountain, symbolizing the pool they are staying in. In some cases, the lighting can be spotlight, in which it can highlight the relationship between them. The lighting then can be pinkish to represent the intimate love.
The acting is also an important part because it has to show the love between them. Maybe when they are hanging out together, they should look in each other's eyes to show the affection and the lover relationship. Moreover, their voice should be smaller, quieter, and sweeter, like the first in-love period when the characters have. When Desiree is talking to Daniel, she might want to look at his eyes, saying " Oh, my Daniel." The voice should obviously sweet, and soft. In order to have sweet voice, she might want to talk slow, and in a lower voice. Also, she can always smile to Daniel to show her love. Furthermore, the movement and actions should act close as well; when she and Daniel falls into the pool, holding against each other. Daniel can hold her up to his chest, kissing her forehead, smiling and taking to her. From the stage left, not knowing each other, to the stage right, hugging and kissing each other; this makes the contraction and love between the two characters.
However, the despair also takes part in this as well; it's when Mathilde tells Desiree that she should leave for better life, not only for Daniel; however, Desiree's eyes are covered by Daniel: she cannot live without him. To show her little dismay by the words of Mathilde, they might be in the center stage; saying those words to her. The stage can also be set in the garden or forest. However, the lighting can be changed into bright yellow light to highlight the seriousness of the talking. Moreover, Instead of the flood light, I am going to use spot light to focus on the conversation, noticing the audience that here comes the important scenery. Moreover, this scene is like a foreshadowing; Mathilde knows Desiree might live in unhappiness and despair at the end, so this scene is important. And Mathilde should have a serious tone talking to Desiree; yet, Desiree can have a relaxing voice and tone: like not paying so much attention to these events to display the contract of these two characters.
