Chapter 1
This story sets in an island called Jewel of the Antilles. In this world, there are different kinds of people, rich and poor who live in different places. People in this island believe in gods: Asaka, goddess of earth, plants, and all growing things, and Agwe, god of the sea, and waters. They work as peasants to grow crops, to gather legumes, to pray to the gods for good harvest.
Monsieur Bienconnu, who is the village centenarian, tells the stories of the gods to the peasants.
Mama Euralie and Toutou Julian live in this island with the main character, Ti Moune.
Ti Moune is a little black pesant girl who is always daydreaming about a car was racing past on a distant road.
Chapter 2
When all the peasants are going up to the Vaudun ceremony, Ti Moune will come outside the Gallimard lands to take a rest. She will put her body under to water to listen to the sounds. And she then remembers a time period that when the lands need water from the gods, but Asaka refuses to nourish the lands, and that’s when Ti Moune’s real mother abandons her under a mango tree. In addition, Agwe gets mad, pouring waters from heavens. With this scary move, lots of people lost their lives. Yet, Mama Euralie and Toutou Julian found Ti Moune under the tree, and they picked her up as their own child. As Ti Moune lies down and thinks about those things, Toutou Julian wasn’t at the Vaudun ceremony since he is complaining about the drought.
