The comparison between Day Women and Night Women

KK Blog Post 3 -- Compare Night Women to New York Day Women. What new opportunities do women have in the US vs. Haiti? What experiences are similar in both stories/places? What does this suggest about gender roles?

Night Women and New York Day Women are two very different stories. However, there is so kind of connections within the two stories. In the Night Women, the narrator is a young woman who lives in Haiti. Her life is not easy at all because she has to take care of her child by herself since her husband left the family. Also, it's hard for a Haitian woman to work in the factory, so her only working choice is to become a prostitute so that she is able to support the family, having the incomes and sending her son into the colleges. The only opportunity for her is to become a night women, welcoming all the customers at night. Even though, her son doesn't know this opportunity at all; sometimes, she hesitates: how and what to tell her son about her job.
New York Women is then talking about the narrator and her family all moved to New York to seek a better life. The parents may use multiple methods just to get over to this land here. Also, America is a difficult city to live in: people have to bear the expenses on everything. However, they survive in this condition. The young girl who is working at an advertisement office in Manhattan. She then finds out that her mother also has a job in Manhattan indeliberately.  Then, she knows that fact that her mother is a nanny in the city: her mother looks after other children in New York City. However, her mom never confesses her about her job, thinking might be a shameful job to tell her.
In New York, there is a new opportunity for women because they don't have to live like night women anymore. They don't necessary to become a prostitute for supporting their lives anymore. On the other hand, the women then must work as a day woman, babysitting other kids. This is a new opportunity that the mother will never sleep with other people. In Haiti, because of certain reasons, women have to choose the night women's job so that they can have income and support the family. Women are not qualified in the society that they live in, so they have to choose to become a prostitute. In America, people can choose to become day women so that they can also earn money. However, they might not care about their children that much because they have to take care of other kids. It's a sacrifice for both of the day women and night women. For the day women, they have to sacrifice their time to spend time with the children. Yet, for the night women, they have to sacrifice their body to earn money. Moreover, they hide their jobs from their children, thinking their jobs as shameful. The night women hide her job because she doesn't want her child to know her job is sleeping with other men.
On the other hand, the day women hide her job from her child because she thinks her child might not understand her job and situation. Maybe other mothers in her child's class are wealthy, educated, and employed with a higher job opportunity. As a result, the day women lady doesn't want to endure the shames from herself. The similarity between the two stories is that they both talk about the relationship between the mother and children. These two children all want their mother by their sides very much, all eagerly to gain the love from their mothers. In the Night women, the mother cares about her son with sweet ways, seeing her son as the precious gifts. In the New York Day Women, the mother is kind of ignorant; her daughter sees this as careless. However, the two mothers all want their children to become better. The night women lady collects money for her son's college. The New York Day lady's daughter is in an advertisement company, so she is well educated. For their future, they all spend their lives and everything for getting the best. This similarity suggests that women always works in the lower class for the children. Sometimes, for the best education to their kids, women work harder in the job. However, the jobs suggest that even the places change over time, the work is similar, 'taking care of' other people. Yet, America still has a better living standard than living in Haiti because of the opportunity.
