A Poetry Handbook 29-34

More Devices of Sound:
Sound can also be heard in some cases. In the book, it talks about the devices that have been used for a lot of times. Alliteration is the repetition of the initial sound of words in a line or lines. For example, It bleeds the black blood of the blueberry. This sentence is a great example because it has the ‘b’ sound for every single word. It illustrates the repetition of the initial sound of words. Assonance is the repetition of vowel sounds within words in a line or lines. The example is ‘ and land so lightly And roll back down the mound beside the hole.’ All the words have vowels in them. Because the position, it is inside the words, assonances are less obvious than alliteration, but it is still important in the poem. Onomatopoeia: It is the use of a word that, through its sense, represents what it defines. Bees, Buzz. Cats, Meow..etc.  In the poem, poets are trying to create the sound by using onomatopoeia. For example, the bell rings “tintinnabulation”, the author is trying to demonstrate the sound. How does a clock or a bell rings? Moreover, the change or the interconnectedness is extremely important. “Once the ivory box is broken, Beats the golden bird no more.” The first two lines are connected, yet he then changes it. The sound in poetry is rich, lively. Every part is connected with reasons, rhythms, and tones.
