The Glass Menagerie is a play of representing memory, the relationship between family members. It was written by Tennessee Williams. His writing inspiration was mainly aspired by his life experience in his family. The main character in the Glass Menagerie is Tom, Amanda, and Laura. Tom is the narrator of the story, representing Williams himself. Tom is a young boy in the family, but because of the left of the father, working in a warehouse, he then has so many burdens on his shoulders so that the family wouldn't live in streets. Amanda is the mother in the family that she totally depends on Tom's job, yet she still takes care of the two children. The other child is Laura, she lives in the house with her family, and she is a shy character in this book. Dropped out from both high school and typewriting school because of her fear and self-abased. The story then begins.
In our group, we selected the first dinner scene because that scene represented the initial conflict between Tom and Amanda. The first scene introduces the characters so it might help the audience to see the entire show. Also, it highlights the family problems of characters that gives audiences about the relationship among the family members.Amanda is a nagging, annoying, stereotype and controlled character in my interpretation. She is the most talkative person in the family that she talks the most in the script. She judges people for small things. For example, in the first scene, Tom doesn’t chew on the table seems to Amanda as a huge problem. She adjusts him for not making the sound of chewing. Also, she doesn’t allow Tom to smoke, accusing him of smoking too much in the house. She doesn't even allow Tom to write in the house because of her personality of annoying. Amanda is annoying because she tries to control everything in the family, she believes that she has the ability to control each family members. The family members, Tom and Laura, all are being taken over by Amanda's eagerness. She doesn't allow Tom to do certain thing such as smoking, going to the movies or writing for his book. Not only Tom is being controlled, Laura is another character who is being controlled. Amanda always has the stereotype in her mind where men should be the one is working. For the women, they just need to have a great husband. Amanda expected that Laura could find a boyfriend or a husband that can take care of the entire house.
As I mentioned, the themes for our group would be imagination. Firstly, in Amanda’s mind, the happiest thing for her is the gentlemen callers she had before. 17 gentlemen callers indicated about her previously happy life and her motivation of living forward, yet she faces so many different troubles today. As a result, when she mentions about the gentlemen callers, she would be proud and be showing off to the family. Indicating her self-confidence in having so many gentlemen callers besides her back. Whereas in Laura’s mind, she only dreamed about her glass animals, dreaming that the glass animals would be the only friend she had in the family. However, Tom’s imagination is “the ‘movies’. His only bailment would be going to the movie which highlights the point of escaping the house. Another theme of our group would be the fighting. In our group, we tended to focus more on the fighting scene between Amanda and Tom. Amanda deliberately had all different issues with Tom such as eating habit, smoking and going to the movies. Sometimes, people will see these issues as small problems in a family. Yet, once the argument becomes bigger and maybe some people couldn’t endure anymore, then they would just give up the family relationship. The two fighting we chose can also represent the repetition of fighting in the family. A constant argument between Amanda and Tom can emphasize the actual problem they had in the family. At first, Tom obeys a little of his mother, yet as it goes up, he thinks maybe the best way to solve it is to leave the family.
Amanda is an annoying person in the book. As I mentioned before that Amanda’s personality. I now will analyze some small details for Amanda as a character in the scene. From the word-chew, constantly saying-chew, we can see her annoyance because how can a person focus on such small details of chewing food in their mouth. Moreover, everyone has so many different habits. This person constantly command people on how to eat thing is annoying. From this interpretation, I then think she is an annoying person by concentrating on such a small details. As a result, I create some of the performances that would emphasize the annoyance. For example, when Tom is coming from the warehouse, In my interpretation of Amanda’s annoyance, She will be standing up and nagging him about what should he do with his special eating ways. She judges him with the strict and useless standard. I will slow some sentences down so that Tom will be able to hear me and my emphasis on chewing food. Then, Tom will think Amanda is such an annoying character, If I say every single word, and adjust his eating. The words that I can slow down are:" chew your food, Honey, human beings must chew your food before they swallow it down in the first scene.” That emphasizes how annoying she is. As a result, Tom will probably think Amanda is deliberate of adjusting it and frowning on the stage of saying so many rules on the table. Also, I can stand up and accuse Tom of not doing the right way of eating ways, I will then be more focusing on him than Laura. Standing up can pressure Tom and makes my character even more annoying. I even stand up and adjust your eating habit, then you must listen to me. Also, that would be more serious to him and because Tom says about her hawk-like attention, I should stare at him with my attention in the eating scene.
Amanda treats Tom and Laura with different attitudes because of her stereotyped personality. As we can see in Act 1 Scene 1. Amanda says:" Resume your seat, Resume your seat, You keep yourself fresh and pretty for the gentlemen callers." This sentence symbolized as Amanda only wants her daughter to stay free and pretty for the callers, yet not working in the factory. Fresh and pretty are qualified for all the girls. In this sentence, I can interpret this as your only business is to be pretty. However, in Act 1 Scene 3, Amanda wants Tom to pay more attention to the work, not just stay in the house and writing his book. " How can you jeopardize your job? jeopardize our security? How you think we'd manage?" The word-Jeopardize means it already dangered the family in a way, indicating Amanda wants Tom to work in the warehouse because of the fact that if he didn't do work, the entire family will be dragged by Tom. As a result, She has the stereotype in her mind in which she thinks girls just need to marry a wonderful man. Laura is an obedient child in the family; she always listens to her mother's word so Amanda will treat her extremely nice. For example, She says:" Tom, Don't make mother nervous, make up to her, apologize." From this sentences, we can see that she cares about her mother, not even want her mother to get hurt from Tom. As a result, Amanda might also treat her nicely. In the scene, I have an obvious level of treating them differently. For example, at my interpretation, I can treat Laura in a gentle way, maybe I can soften my voice to Laura and I can add more actions such as holding her arms to let her gain more confidence and always smiling to her, nodding to her. For example, In the part when Laura says I am afraid that I don’t receive any mother. Then, I will hold her in the downstage to show: Laura should have confidence in her mind, and let her be more confident. Rather than a stick in the corner, playing the glass animals alone, I will lead her in the front and maybe believe in her. On the other hand, I will treat Tom different with Laura. For Tom, I can strict my voice like command him to do certain things. Because of his disobey to the family, Amanda might treat him worse, not smiling at him, and scold him doing to wrong thing in the factory. For example, it will display easily in the first scene when Tom arrives, I can speak to him with no smile, scolding him for the wrong eating habit. Also, I will have a stricter voice when he wants to go out. Sitting in the chair with staring at Tom can indicate strictness. Standing from the character of Amanda, she wants her kids to listen to her words, yet Tom is doing to opposite. As a result, I will say badly: “ you are not excused from the table, honey.” This allows Amanda to threaten Tom and makes him listen to me.
Amanda is also a controlled character in the book. As we can see in the Act I Scene I, Amanda says:" You are not excused from the table. and also:" you smoke too much." The word, aren't excuse emphasize the toughness of Amanda. The words like a commanding tone in which it states that she wants to force Tom to stay on the table. Since the fact that their father left them in the house alone. Amanda then had the responsibility to support the entire house. As a result, she wants Tom to do everything in the house. In Act 2, we emphasize this as an important theme. For example, Amanda thinks that Tom only cares about his dream because he goes to the movie every night and writes his book. Amanda doesn’t realize that Tom pays any attention to the family. So when Tom is writing again, she is mad and deliberately goes to Tom, scolding him for not turning the light on. Also, because she is a controlling a character. She doesn’t allow Tom to go out of the house. I can perform this by pulling Tom’s sleeves. When Amanda doesn’t want Tom to get out, she can act by grabbing his arms and cloth to show the eagerness. Also, she can also speak fast on the stage because, on the other hand, she wants Tom to hear everything she said. Saying quickly can also point out her eagerness of controlling Tom. Moreover, Amanda can sharpen some sentences because then it would be more commanding to Tom. For example, “ You are going to listen to me, Tom Wingfield.” In this sentence, I can say it with strong emphasis because the previous one is Tom wants to leave the family. If I say it strongly, then it can act more controlling to Tom.
In the performance, I typically display the annoying personality in Amanda. I display the annoyance of the character, a self-confident and controlling both depicted her personality. For example, I display she loves to talk about her gentlemen callers by looking at the top, standing in the upstage, imaging that the gentlemen callers were right in front of me. Also, I showed her controlling in the performances as well, commanding Tom not to leave the house, and chew his food before he swallow it down. What's more, I treated them with different attitudes. For example, I lower my voice and use sweet voice toward Laura. Yet, with Tom, I use tougher language, accusing him for doing the wrong behavoirs. However, this character is extremely hard to show, because she also cares about Tom. When Tom is writing his book, Amanda goes up and turns on the light for him. As a result, I sometimes couldn't perform this as perfect Amanda. Moreover, I always forgot my lines because my nervousness, going on the stage and performing with the lights on. Especially I have so many lines so that I am the person who leads the entire play. As a result, I need to work a lot to make this possible, yet I tried in the performance. But it's not that good because I didn't remember the lines that K suppose to remember. However, it is a fun experience for me to actually be one of the director, I then notice how would I director would be like. Also, I get more in touch with
the character Amanda, thinking it was a funny character that although she is a controlled character, but she also cares about the family.
