First draft

Firstly, I selected the first dinner scene because that scene represented the initial conflict between Tom and Amanda. The first scene introduces the characters, so it might help audience to see the entire show. Also, it highlights the family problems of characters that gives audiences about the relationship among the family members.

The theme for our part will be the fighting and the imagination that each one has. Firstly, in Amanda’s mind, the happiest thing for her is the gentlemen callers she had before. 17 gentlemen callers indicated about her previous life and her motivation of living forward. As a result, when she mentions about the gentlemen callers, she would be proud and showing off to the family. Indicating the self-confident in her. Whereas in Laura’s mind, she only dreamed about her glass animals, dreaming that the glass animals would be the only friend she had in the family. However, Tom’s imagination is “the ‘movies’. His only bailment would be going to the movie which highlight the point of escaping the house. Another theme of our group would be the fighting. In our group, we tended to focus more on the fighting scene between Amanda and Tom. Amanda deliberately had all different issues with Tom such as eating habit, smoking, and going to the movies. Sometimes, people will see these issues as small problems in a family. Yet, once the argument becomes bigger and maybe some people couldn’t endure anymore, then they would just give up the family relationship. The two fighting we chose can also represent the repetition of fighting in the family. At first, Tom obeys a little of his mother, yet as it goes up, he thinks maybe the best way to solve it is to leave the family.
Amanda is a nagging, annoying, stereotype and controlled character in my  interpretation. She is the most talkative person in the family that she talks the most in the script. She always seeks for small issues in the family. For example, in the first scene, Tom doesn’t chew in the table seems to Amanda as a huge problem. She adjusts him for not making the sound of chewing. Also, she doesn’t allow Tom to smoke, accusing him for smoking too much in the house. Little problems in the family represents large problem in Amanda’s eyes. She is also a stereotyped character in the family. As we can see in Act 1 Scene 1. Amanda tells her daughter to stay fresh and pretty for the gentlemen callers. This symbolized as Amanda only wants her daughter to stay free and pretty for the callers, yet not working in the factory. Her only hope for Laura will be having a great gentleman caller over to the house. However, in Act 1 Scene 3, Amanda wants Tom to pay more attention to the work, not just stay in the writing for the entire time.
Amanda is a person with annoying person in the scene. As I mentioned before that Amanda’s personality. I now will analyze some small details for Amanda as a character in the scene. For example, when Tom is coming from the warehouse, In my interpretation of Amanda’s annoyance, She will be standing up and nagging him about what should he do with his special eating ways. She judges him with strict and useless standard.  I will slow some sentences down so that Tom will be able to hear me and my emphasis about chewing food. Then, Tom will think Amanda is such a annoying character, If I say every single word, and adjust his eating. The words that I can slow down are; chew your food, Honey, human beings must chew your food before they swallow it down in the first scene.”  That emphasizes how annoying she is. As a result, Tom will probably think Amanda is deliberate of adjusting it, and frowning on stage of saying so many rules on the table. Also, I can standing up and accusing Tom for not doing the right way of eating ways, I will then be more focusing on him than Laura. Also, that would be more serious to him and because Tom says about her hawk like attention, I should stare at him with my attention in the eating scene. These action all pointed out the hatred of Amanda. Moreover, Amanda doesn’t allow Tom to smoke, doesn’t even allow him to leave the table. As a result, I can use a stricter voice in this scene, scolding him for going out to smoke.
Amanda treats Tom and Laura with different attitudes. She has the stereotype in her mind in which girls just need to marry a good man, and Laura is a obedient child in the family, she always listens to her mother. As a result, Amanda might  treat her nicely. In the scene, I have an obvious level of treating them differently. For example, at my interpretation, I can treat Laura in a gentle way, maybe I can soften my voice to Laura and I can add more actions such as holding her arms to let her gain more confident and always smiling to her, nodding to her. For example, In the part when Laura says I am afraid that I don’t receive any mother. Then, I will hold her in the downstage to show: Laura should have confidence in her mind, and let her be more confident. Rather than stick in the corner, playing the glass animals alone, I will lead her in the front and maybe believe in her. On the other hand, I will treat Tom different with Laura. For Tom, I can strict my voice like command him to do certain things. In Because of the his disobey, Amanda might treat him worse, not smiling to him, and scold him doing to wrong thing in the factory. For example, it will display easily in the first scene when Tom arrives, I can speak to him with no smile, scolding him for the wrong eating habit. Also, I will have a stricter voice when he wants to go out. Standing from the character of Amanda, she wants her kids to listen to her words, yet Tom is doing to opposite. As a result, I will say badly: “ you are not excused from the table, honey.” This allow Amanda to frightened Tom, and makes him listen to me When Tom is not chewing with his food, I can look at him in a way
Amanda is also a controlled character which is linked to my previous paragraph. Since the fact that their father left them in the house alone. Amanda then had the responsibility to support the entire house. As a result, she wants Tom to do everything in the house. In Act 2, we emphasize this as a important theme. For example, Amanda thinks Tom only cares about his dream because he goes to the movie every night and writes his book. Amanda doesn’t realize that Tom pays any attention to the family. So when Tom is writing again, she is mad and deliberately goes to Tom, scolding him for not turning the light on. Also, because she is a controlling a character. She doesn’t allow Tom to go out of the house. I can perform this by pulling Tom’s sleeves. When Amanda doesn’t want Tom to get out, she can act by grabbing his arms and cloth to show the eagerness. Also, she can also speak fast on the stage because on the other hand she wants Tom to hear everything she said. Saying quickly can also point out her eagerness of controlling Tom. Moreover, Amanda can sharpen some sentences because then it would be more commanding to Tom. For example, “ You are going to listen to me, Tom Wingfield.” In this sentence, I can say it with strong emphasis because the previous one is Tom wants to leave the family. If I say it strongly, then it can act more controlling to Tom. Not only Tom is being controlled, Laura is another character who is being controlled. Amanda always has the stereotype in her mind where men should be the one is working. For the women, they just need to have a great husband. Amanda expected that Laura could find a boyfriend or a husband that can take care of the entire house. In addition, Laura is a timid and shy character in my mind, listening to her mother’s order and command. As a result, Amanda will be more worried about her daughter, yet not like treating Tom. She can treat her daughter nicely, but still cares about the arriving of the gentlemen callers. For example, in the book when I talk to Laura in the first scene about the gentlemen callers, I can be more patient with Laura by holding her arms, checking the situation about  her confidence and the gentlemen callers. I will say nice thing to Laura since she listens to me. However, when she says about” I believed that no gentle will come.” Then, I can be more harsh on her because Amanda hopes Laura could find someone, but she still couldn’t have any confidence on herself. Once that happened, I will have tougher tones to Laura, such as being annoyed( Amanda is too awesome, but why her daughter is such a failure). Amanda must be so annoyed by her daughter’s lack of self-confidence. As a result, I will frown on the part where Laura says she doesn’t believe any will come. Also, I can have a stronger voice on my sentences to emphasize my impatience. “Not one gentle callers? Not one? You must be kidding? Has there being a flood or a tornado?” These sentences pointed out the fact that I am helpless to my daughter that she does’t ever believe in herself and also I am having impatience emotion to my daughter. Maybe I can do this by talking loudly to Laura that restrict her for being self-abuse again. Moreover, I can sighs about her actions of being that way-it makes me sad about her situation. Then, I can leave her alone since I could rescue her from her world and disbelief.

In the performance part, I did a lot of things that was based on my interpretation. For example,
