Feedback

Last week, In lit & performance class, we did our group scene. We are performing the first dinner scene, which is the first scene in this book and this scene can clearly show the problem we had in the family. I am the most annoying character in this play, Amanda is the controlling character in the family. She wants Tom and Laura listen to her every time. In my opinion, she is the boss in the family. She always wants to control everything in the family through her words. We can obviously see that when she is talking to the family. She is so talkative on the table that she wants to share every single thing with her family, telling them what had happened to her. However, I think she is only focusing on Tom because of her stereotype that men should work harder in the family. She seeks to Tom for doing things for the family, but Tom only wants to leave the family as soon as possible. She, as a result, has more attention to Tom that even Tom is so tired of work, she wants to judge him. Maybe Tom doesn’t want to leave that soon, but because of Amanda controls over to Tom, so that he then just goes out to find his dream.
In the feedback I get from everybody, I am happy about people said they liked my Amanda. Some people thought I have a great connection with the annoying in Amanda. The fact is I imagine that I am in the character about talkative, controlling character in the play. In the first time, through brief reading, we can see that Amanda is a talkative character when she first appears in the scene, she talks to Laura about her funniest experience in Church, and when Tom comes, sitting down on the chair. She then judges Tom to use his fork properly, and also educate him about his eating style on the table. From this, we can see that she is so annoying that she wants to complain little things about Tom. In the first place, she is just saying things to Laura about the recent news, but then when it turns to Tom, she is suppressing him as the man of the house, teaching him what should do or not. As a result, as we read more, we can see that she has definitely different tones to Laura and Tom. Also, I tried to understand Amanda, her husband left her in the house with two children. She has to do things on her own, so she must depend on someone that is rather reliable, and maybe she wants to find someone that can express all of her anger. Tom, they can be the first choice that she picks. The most alike person to the father would be Tom, she can then just throws anger to him. Aside from that, Because we have acknowledged that she has the stereotype about men should be working in the warehouse; women should just married to a wealthy husband so we can see that she wants Tom to be the one that she can rely on. Over-confident and pride in her can also build up her character.
Also, I rely on Lee’s method, thinking that she lives in the Great Depression, the two kids are now that good, they all had different imaginary. As a mother, I want to drag my daughter Laura out of the imaginary issue, yet Tom is different. He actually wants to leave the family.
I had a lot of drawbacks as well. Sometimes, I laugh too often. Maybe is because when I see Joey is eating like that, I just cannot help myself, but I will try not to do that again because I know that’s serious. I will just stay focus that thinks myself as the character.  Also, some people said I speak too fast because I thought I am Amanda, so supposedly I need to speak as fast as I can. However, some people couldn’t understand my words, so I would just speak slower in order for them to hear every word. Moreover, I think our scene is too short because it was only 5 minutes, but we need 10-12 minutes so I can slow down my speech. I can also add more lines for Amanda, Tom or Laura. Laura can actually say more because she has fewer lines that we do. We already decided to add more lines for Laura about her glass menagerie because she is not only shy, but she is also sinking into her own world. Adding a monologue about her glass animals can help the situation. The audience can understand better about our situation.
