Proposal

In the previous semester, we have already read the book of the Glass Menagerie which is a memory play written by Tennessee Williams. He was famous because of the Glass Menagerie, and as we finish the book. We now have another proposal due to perform one or two scene of this book. I would like to try the character of Amanda to show her dominance in the play because of the fact that I want to try something new. I always am a shy and timid person, so the personality of Amanda and I are totally different. She predominates over the family, the two kids she had; however, me, I am not a controlling character in the reality. I just want what it fits me better. The character of Amanda really challenges me and the memorization I have since she is really talkative,  On the other hand, she wants everything that has advantages to herself. Also, she wants to control other people through talking: she thinks she has the ability to grip the choice of 17 gentlemen callers in her hometown, she says that she used conversation power to control over them, so she ruminates that she has the confidence of convincing others.

I really want to try the character of Amanda, so I start to think about the scenes that Amanda appears. Then, the first table scene just suddenly comes to my mind. The first dinner scene is when Tom begins to remember his past. Maybe he is feeling sad about life, then he remembers the past. He monologues and introduces the story that he is going to tell the audience. Then, the scene just comes up. As a reminder, Amanda fights with Tom most of her time because she thinks Tom should spend his time on work(warehouse), not just writing his literature, so maybe I will play Amanda as an annoying, nagging woman who always hopes the man should do the work, and women just have to be pretty and married to the gentleman caller. She is annoying because she wants Tom to do the work, but she doesn’t work that hard to reach the success. She is so dependent on other people, so that will give Tom a lot of pressures and stresses to do well. On the one hand, Tom also has a dream to achieve, so obviously, he will do whatever to achieve his dream first, yet Amanda commands him for everything. She never cares about what he thinks and what he wants to do, only just commands him for what he doesn’t want to do. Maybe she thinks man supposed to do more things than women. The stereotype imprinted on Amanda’s head. As a result, she will be harsh to Tom, but nicer to her girl Laura.  Also, Laura is crippled both physically and mentally. As a result, Amanda will be extra nice to Laura. Amanda also tries to infuriate Tom, so he will do more to the family or to stimulate him for a better life. Amanda is the character who is always talking to other people, and at first, she is talking to Laura about the funniest experience. Afterward, when Tom comes in, she is judging the eating habits of Tom’s. In addition, they had a small conflict, but then it resolves it when Laura talks about Amanda’s gentlemen callers. That’s when Amanda is released and exhilarated when she talks about these. Amanda only lives in her imaginary when she remembers the past she had. The dinner scene indicates the relationships between the family. It gives the audiences a small brievation about the issues about the family. It also includes some characteristics and some personalities of each of the characters.  For example, Amanda is annoying and talkative which the audiences can see it at the beginning of the story. It also gives a basis and foundation for what is the family look like, so when they fight again, it is not unreasonable.
