First Semester reflection
I am glad and excited to choose the course IB Theatre. At first, I just wanted to have fun in this class, but now I feel like I actually learn something from this class. I also think this class is really fun because we had many activities went with a different section.
In the first section, we have learned how to speak and act in a larger reaction. We had many activities such as using acting voice to say the lines, and it also taught me not to become nervous when I speak to others. As time passes, we also studied the how to read a monologue in the acting voice. How can we act when we are speaking alone. We should add more body languages and the emotions towards our acting. As my character, I still remember that I am disappointed to my dad that he never comes to my football game, so in my adaptation, I should be more disappointed, annoyed, and desperate about what he did. Using sigh, lower my head can actually influence how sad I am.
We also studied Stanslaski, he was the one who wanted to let the actors use their emotions. He wanted everyone to feel the emotions that characters had. He taught us to utilize the environment, and the actor’s relationships with other characters in the play so we can have some connections. He also wanted to naturalize the performance; he wanted to let the audiences to cry, to feel, not exaggerate their feelings. Then, we had a bigger project about creating a story that was related to our monologue. Learning the Stanislavski method helps us to establish and had a better understanding of how to express our feelings. However, I found it was hard because people might fake their feelings. As a beginner, I don't have many experiences as an advanced actor, but I am also reading the lines of the characters, and trying to understand his emotions, so I could express more about his feelings rather than adding my feelings into his.
Also, we had learned about Brecht method of acting as well. Unlike Stanslaski, he doesn't focus on the acting and the realistic of the acting. He, however, is more focusing on the social problems, he wants the audiences to know the struggling of the social classes and political issues on the society, thus we can think deeply. He doesn't want the actors to entertain the audiences, but to let the audience to understand and think. We also read the book about Brecht which helped us understand more about the varsity play of the Caucasian Chalk Circle. Caucasian Chalk Circle is an example of helping us to see his understanding. We also watched a short clip about Stanslaski style and Brecht style of the same product. It really helped me to understand the difference between the two section. I think I had changed a lot from the learning, I am used to expressing my feelings on stage, and I am not that nervous since I studied in both Ms.Guarino’s classes and drama in the fall. I am appreciated that I choose this course rather than other courses. Throughout the year, I think I would learn more and had better and mature experiences about acting on stage.
Although we had a small group of class, I enjoy working with my classmates. As a small class will have, we now have more joyfulness and communication during the class. We exchanged our ideas, cooperate with one another. Finding out the problems of each other have, and resolve it together.
