In Act 3 Scene 1 who is really responsible for Mercutio’s death: Mercutio, who provoked the fight, Tybalt who stabbed him, or Romeo who got between them? Use specific evidence (direct quotes) from the play to back this up.
Initially, I think Tybalt is responsible for Mercutio’s death. For one thing, when Mercutio provokes the fight between, Tybalt actually draws his sword up, and fight against Mercutio. Even Romeo persuades or begs Tybalt to stop by saying love the name of Capulet. For example: I do protest I never injured thee,But love thee better than thou canst devise,Till thou shalt know the reason of my love. And so, good Capulet—which name I tender As dearly as my own—be satisfied. By saying this, Romeo hopes Tybalt will stop fighting, and putting down Tybalt’s sword. This sentences show us about the reason why Romeo doesn’t want to fight and the persuasion. But with abusing words, Tybalt draws up his sword and fights again. Mercutio says: “O calm dishonourable, vile submission!Alla stoccata carries it away. (draws his sword)Tybalt, you ratcatcher, will you walk?” These sentences irritates Tybalt and it causes him to fight back. Afterward, however, when Romeo patiently advises them not to fight, and Romeo even mentions about the prince. (draws his sword) Draw, Benvolio. Beat down their weapons. Gentlemen, for shame! Forbear this outrage. Tybalt, Mercutio! The Prince expressly hath Forbidden bandying in Verona streets. Hold, Tybalt! Good Mercutio! He says if the prince sees this, he will be mad, and he is banning every fighting. So when they rest, Romeo hugs Mercutio and hopes him he will stop as a good model, yet the worse thing is Tybalt comes forward, and stabs Mercutio. He tries to stop them, but Tybalt is stubborn at the end, and he keeps fighting and doesn’t hear what Romeo’s words.

How would you stage this as a director? Be specific.
If I were the director, I would probably let Tybalt become more aggressive that couldn’t hear anything from Romeo. All he wants is fighting against the bad enemy. When Tybalt says: “ I am here for you.” I will let Tybalt become more violent and puts up sword in an aggressive way. He can use his emotions or facial expression to show that as well, such as running to Mercutio or use heartless facial expression. Then, it would become more dramatic. Also when Romeo is speaking to Tybalt, Tybalt might not just put down his sword, he will say something to Romeo such as : “no! You are the enemy of our family. My only will is to kill you, so my family will be satisfied.” Maybe can also use body language to show his ignorance to Romeo because if he shows that, the responsibility is on him. For Romeo, he can use more thoughtful and concerned to the characters on the stage by saying: “ No with weeping sounds, and says please, don’t fight, I beg you guys, I don’t want to see anyone will get hurt or something like that. For the music, the music would be cruel once Tybalt comes forward.
