Act 3 notes
Act 3 scene 1: Benvolio and Mercutio are hanging out together on the street, and Mercutio proposes that they should be gone because he is afraid of having a fight with the Capulets. Mercutio replies that Benvolio has as quick a temper as any man in Italy, and should not criticize others for their short fuses. Tybalt enters and wants to talk to one of the men, but Mercutio starts to mock at him, and provoke a fight with Tybalt. Romeo comes in, and Tybalt turns his attention to Romeo. But since Tybalt is the cousin of Juliet, Romeo doesn’t want to provoke fight with Tybalt. Tybalt wants him to have the sword and fight with him, but Romeo has a reason, and doesn’t want to fight. Mercutio starts to provoke again and starts to intricate Tybalt, so Tybalt pulls his sword out. Mercutio and Tybalt begin to fight. Romeo, attempting to restore peace, throws himself between the fighting, yet Tybalt stabs Mercutio under Romeo’s arm, and as Mercutio falls, Tybalt and his men hurry away. Mercutio blames at Romeo and leads Benvolio out of the scene. But Benvolio comes instantly, and says Mercutio died because of Tybalt. Then, Tybalt appears again, Romeo pulls out his sword and decides not to be effeminate again, so he fights with Tybalt and finally kills Tybalt. Benvolio urges Romeo to leave the place. The Prince enters and so as other citizens, and the Montagues and Capulets. Benvolio tells the Prince the story of the brawl, emphasizing Romeo’s attempt to keep the peace, but Lady Capulet cries that Benvolio is lying to protect the Montagues. She thinks Romeo should die as well. But the Prince chooses to exile Romeo from Verona. If Romeo is found in the city, he will be killed.
Thinking: When I actually look at the scene I feel like it’s Mercutio who provoke fighting with Tybalt, and even he died, it’s on him because Romeo already convinced Tybalt not to fight, but Mercutio constantly mocks at Tybalt, so he is the fight maker in here. Romeo is the peacemaker now, he wants to prevent every fight, but finally his enemy had killed his friend. So he decides to fight back. But I think Romeo shouldn’t just kill Tybalt back because it’s Mercutio’s idea to fight against it. I don’t really like Mercutio, he is always the one who pushing everything into the bad aspect. Romeo should just leave him alone.
Sentences: Nay, an there were two such, we should have none shortly, for one would kill the other. Thou, why, thou wilt quarrel with a man that hath a hair more or a hair less in his beard than thou hast.
Consort? What, dost thou make us minstrels? An thou make minstrels of us, look to hear nothing but discords. Here’s my fiddlestick.
Act 3 scene 2:
In the house of Capulet, Juliet is missing Romeo that she loves him so much. Suddenly, the nurse comes in, and carries news for Juliet, but she is crazy that in the book, it sounds like Romeo died.Juliet starts to worried, and she wants to kill herself as well. Then, the nurse finally says that Tybalt had died from Romeo’s hand, so Romeo is been banished from the city. She is not saying any bad things about her husband, but just be sympathize for him. Juliet is confused that should she cry because Romeo is not died, and Tybalt only wants to kill Romeo, so she doesn’t know what to do. But she realizes that Romeo is been banished, so she couldn’t see her husband anymore. She thinks banishment is actually worse than death from Tybalt and she is so worried and frightened about that. And the nurse asks her if she is going to cry together for Tybalt, Juliet refuses and says she will cry for Romeo because he will not be here anymore. She wants to find Romeo that she wants to say goodbye to him, but the nurse says she is going to find him in the Friar place, and she will take him to see her.
Thinking: Juliet shouldn’t just care about her husband, but also her relatives. Her relative died because of her enemy, if I were Juliet, I would be so sad and mad at Romeo because that’s a life, too. She only cares about her husband. How can she did that, and they just only married for 1 hour, and Juliet loves him for everything.
Sentences: Gallop apace, you fiery-footed steeds, Toward Phoebus' lodging. Such a wagoner As Phaeton would whip you to the west And bring in cloudy night immediately. Spread thy close curtain, love-performing night, That runaways' eyes may wink, and Romeo Leap to these arms, untalked of and unseen.
Act 3 scene 3:
Romeo freaks out in the place of Friar, and he asks him about the punishments that the prince had given to him. Friar says the kind prince punishes you to exile from Verona. While Romeo thinks it is a bad idea of being banished. He thinks it’s worse than being killed like Tybalt, so he explains to Friar that if he gets exile from the city, he could never see Juliet again, hold her hand nor kiss her in the face. He feels so depressed, but Friar says he will give him the ways of solving this-antidote. Romeo thinks it’s bad because he cannot see his wife anymore. While they are talking, someone is knocking on the door of Friar. Friar asks Romeo to calm down and hide in the room. However, Romeo is lying on the floor and doesn’t want to wake up. Then, the nurse comes in, and asks where is Romeo. Friar points at Romeo and says here he is. When Romeo sees the nurse, Romeo is worried about Juliet and about her situation. He assumes that Juliet now thinks of him as a murderer and threatens to stab himself. Friar Lawrence stops him and scolds him for being unmanly. He suggests Romeo a method that maybe Romeo should find Juliet first, and comfort her at the house. Then Romeo must leave Verona before the morning. He will then reside in Mantua until news of their marriage can be spread. Afterward, they will beg the prince and let Romeo to come back from Mantua, so they can be together in the future. Romeo hears this and thinks it is a great idea. As a result, he left with the nurse.
Thinking: Romeo is so effeminacy that only cares about her love. Beside his love, he can work on other things as well. Love for him is such a big deal, even goes to another city matter so much for him. And only Friar provides a method for him, so then, he listens and follows it; I feel like he doesn’t have any ideas about what should he do. But maybe he is just being so nervous and frightened about he killed Tybalt.
Sentences: Romeo, come forth. Come forth, thou fearful man. Affliction is enamoured of thy parts, And thou art wedded to calamity.
