1. What is the purpose of Dandicat adding the Epilogue and focusing that on connections with people, the audience, when most of the book involves a form of segregation and separation?

In my opinion, Dandicat added the Epilogue in the story is to give the audience of her stories in which tell the audience about why she is writing those stories down. She, as the author of the book, wants to recall the stories from Haiti and write it down for people. Maybe to let the people who left Haiti to remember the culture of Haitian. Also, if Danticat writes down as the preface, people sometimes will forget to read it or attempt to not read it. However, if she includes the Epilogue in the later story, readers will acknowledge this one as her most important story. Authors often put their most important story at the beginning and at the end to emphasize the meanings. Maybe, she wants us to know that this is important to read and then we know this one is to focus on her impacts and her obstacles when she writes the stories down. Those previous stories are all getting inspiration from her stories, in which it explains that the fact why many stories' protagonists are females.  At first, her mother didn't appreciate her work; maybe she was disappointed at her for being a writer. However, as she showed her passion for writing, her mother might know her efforts and might appreciate her work. Nevertheless, in this epilogue, she wants to sacrifice herself to let Haitians to remember their past and their culture so that they can pass on to their next generation. " And over the years when you needed us, you have always cried " Krik?" and we have answered "Krak!" and it has shown us that you have not forgotten us."  Her job is to keep it down and tell the stories that those women couldn't able to tell. I think her stories want us to learn a sense of excitement; it might not be as common as in other books. However, I think she wants to create some connections with the audience. As readers are reading Krik? Krak!, they can get her emotions in it. For example, in the Epilogue, she says:" Though you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, fear no evil for we are always with you." This sentence gives us a full image of fearless of the author. She, as the author, always wants us to feel the same as her. As a result, we might feel sympathy for her situation.

 2. What is the general theme throughout the whole stories? How does it explain the historical background of Haiti?

In my understanding, the general theme throughout the entire story is from misunderstanding to understanding, in which displaying that the children's indifferent to their parents. In almost all the stories, the children didn't understand their parents at first. In the Children of the Sea, the girl narrator didn't understand her father's devotion. On the other hand, she was blaming her father for disliking the boy narrator. She expresses her hatred through her language in the letters. "He spat in my face. I wish those macoutes would kill him." From these sentences, the girl narrator illustrates her aversion towards her father, wishing him to be killed when he didn't allow the girl for keeping the tapes. The words she chooses give us a sense of cruelty of her father. However, as she finds out that her father spends all of his money just to keep the girl narrator out of danger. She realizes it and appreciates what her father does for her.  Also, from New York Day Women, the narrator illustrates a sense of turning. She changes from not understanding why her mother lied to her to another stage of acknowledging and appreciating her work. " My mother, who accuses me of random offenses as I dash out of the house." In this sentence, we can see the anger from the narrator of not understanding why her mother is going out. However, in the end, she understands her mother more as she says:" Tonight on the subway, I will get up and give my seat to a pregnant woman or a lady about Ma's age." These conversions best explain the narrator's realizations toward her mother. This then explains the historical background as common connections between the children and the parents. In Haiti, maybe the children will not understand the mother's devotion at first. But then, within observations, they can realize their parent's caring. This theme actually can be put in everywhere because, in every place, the children might not understand their parent's pains.
